Pioneers get past Stags

David Birdsell

Friday night football in Deer Park proved to be a tale of two halves as the Stags welcomed defending Caribou Trail League champion Omak.

The home squad opened the game with a heavy dose of ball carrying by quarterback Remi Scott. The senior signal- caller had the final two carries in the six play, 65 yard scoring drive, including the 14 yard scamper to the end zone.

A promising Omak drive on their second possession was thwarted when Dylan Hall fell on the loose football at the Deer Park 26 yard line. The opening half ended when Isiah Eastwood secured an interception in the end zone. The visiting Pioneers again got a taste of the inspired Deer Park defense two possessions later when speedy Sophomore Gavin Carnahan intercepted a Beau Sackman pass and went 25 yards untouched for the score.

Carnahan would provide another display of speed on the Stags opening second half possession. Lined up in the slot to the right of the offensive formation, he took a reverse 38 yards for his second score, which would turn out to be the evenings final tally for the Stags.

The Pioneers Javon Mercado got the Pioneers on the board with a touchdown catch late in the third quarter. The Deer Park defense flexed some muscle on the next Omak possession when Hall batted down a fourth down pass.

Omak would score twice in the final 5: 19, including the game winner with six seconds remaining.
